Marie Curie was born 11-7-1867 in Poland, a very bad time for Poland
because it was under British rule. Czar Alexander II was the ruler over that part of
Poland; the other parts were ruled by Austria and Persia. Maries favorite thing to do was play a game the family called block wars. In this game you would make a fort with blocks and use other blocks to knock the opponents fort down, the last fort standing won. Her other favorite things to do next to block wars was to climb trees, make mud pies, and listen to her sister's plays. Her dad was a principal and her mom was a teacher. The family was very concerned about education and tried to do the most they could to give their children the best education they could. Her mother then had a disease called tuberculosis when Marie was very young. Marie wondered why her mother did not huge or kissed her or anyone else in the family anymore. When her older sister was learning to read Marie would play a game with her sister. They would write letters, cut them out and make words out of them. By the time Marie was four she could read perfectly! When she was in school she had to speak perfect Russian because examiners came to the schools to make sure that the children could speak Russians qualifications. Every time an examiner would come the teacher would call poor Marie because she was the top of her class. Later in her school years the Czar had died and Marie and her friend celebrated by skipping around their desks. |
